Wednesday, Oct. 19 is the date of this year’s Petal It Forward, the Society of American Florist’s international goodwill initiative, where on one day thousands of floral industry participants hand two flowers or bouquets to an unsuspecting stranger, urging them to keep one and share the other with someone else.

While the flower wholesale market has always had roots in St. Louis history, it wasn’t always associated with its LaSalle Street address on floral row that it’s known for today. Beginning in 1890, Wholesale houses for the sale of flowers were located primarily on the streets of Olive and Pine in downtown. Sure, we all buy flowers from time to time — for big events, on special holidays, to mourn the loss of a loved one — but is the every day consumer inspired to buy flowers simply “just because”? That’s the question Eric Fernandez, general manager of Continental Flowers, is asking — and the answer is one he’s hoping to change through the USDA Proposed Cut Flowers and Greens Promotional Order.

“I think a message to promote flowers on a larger scale makes people think about flowers a little bit more,” Fernandez told The Produce News. “We’re not asking people to buy flowers every week ,although we
