Last week Publix GreenWise Market opened its newest location in the redeveloped Water Street neighborhood of Tampa, FL. It is the second of the company’s new-concept specialty, natural and organic stores to be located in a high-rise, multiuse building. Above the store are two towers of apartment living and a parking garage.

Lori Taylor, founder and CEO of The Produce Moms appeared at The Wellness Experience by Kroger in Cincinnati this past week as a featured guest emcee on the main stage for the veggie eating contest where contestants competed to see who could consume the most produce in 10 minutes.  This was the fourth time, at the request of Kroger, that Taylor represented the produce industry at the popular festival co-founded by Kroger and singer Jewel.  Taylor was joined on the main stage by Kroger Vice President of Produce/Floral Miguel Garcia.

The U.S. Apple Association has named a new chair to lead its board of directors. Michigan grower Chris Alpers of RedPath Orchards and Alpers Farms will serve the 2021-22 term.

A third-generation grower, Alpers is the operations manager of RedPath Orchards and Alpers Farms and a partner in Alpers Tree Sales in Lake Leelanau, MI, where he grows apples, as well as sweet and tart cherries.

Alpers' leadership in USApple began when he was selected as a Young Apple Leader in 2014 and has since continued, including three years of service as a USApple officer. His immediate past role was vice chair

Randy Abhold, president of Rainier Fruit Co., will retire at the end of the month. He has a long history in the industry. “It’s difficult, if not impossible, to sum up his achievements over the last 26 years,” said Mark Zirkle, CEO of Rainier. 

Starting his career in his hometown of Yakima, WA, Abhold’s first job was working at a local restaurant. From that humble restaurant job, he was recruited by a hardware store and placed in a position that had him working the floor doing whatever needed to be done. Walmart recently broke ground on its first distribution center in Atlantic Canada — a brand new, 223,000-square-foot facility in Moncton, NB, which is slated to open in fall 2022.

The new distribution center will provide fresh and frozen groceries to 43 Walmart stores in Atlantic Canada. The next-generation facility will benefit East Coast customers by bringing products closer to them. Customers will see better product availability and quicker service whether they choose to shop in-store or online.
