If the March 30 International Fresh Produce Association Town Hall on the European Union’s Green Deal is a good gauge, it appears that the produce industry in Europe is embracing the concept of a more sustainable future and moving in that direction in a deliberate fashion.

The webinar explored the European Green Deal and the circular economy it espouses from several European-centric viewpoints, including a produce company based in the Netherlands, and agtech company in Norway and one of Europe’s top fresh produce associations, which is located in Belgium.

The 2021-22 U.S. citrus crop is forecast to be 6 million tons, down 13 percent from the final output for the 2020-21 season, according to the USDA. Declines in overall production are due to smaller orange and grapefruit crops in California, Florida and Texas, and smaller Mandarin crops in California and Florida.

Orange production in the state of California is expected to decline by 5 percent, split between 4 percent reduction in non-Valencia orange production (navel and early/mid-season varieties) and a 9 percent reduction in Valencia oranges from last season.

Chilean grapes are timely for promoting. Higher volumes of red grapes are cost-friendly while the green market is slightly higher. There probably will be a big draw on grapes for the Easter holiday.

Asparagus is showing good volume coming out of Mexico. Demand is light on a steady market. The weather has been very favorable for growth. Prices are attractive now but may rise as we get closer to Easter ad promotions.
