Collectively Walmart's Chicago stores have not been profitable since the company opened the first one nearly 17 years ago. These stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years. As a result four of its eight Chicago locations will close to the public by Sunday, April 16.

"The remaining four Chicago stores continue to face the same business difficulties, but we think this decision gives us the best chance to help keep them open and serving the community," the company said in a statement.

I don't think we saw this past winter coming on so strong — especially with all the rain and snow in California — but nature has its ways of giving us warnings.

According to old folklore, some of the signs that winter will be ugly are quite unusual. If corn husks are thicker, there is a bad winter ahead. If apple skins are tougher than normal, it will be a bad winter. And also, if the skins on onions are thicker, we're in for a rough winter. Raley’s and FirstFruits Farms teamed up to provide fresh apples to the Placer County Food Bank. As a part of the Take a Bite Out of Hunger program, 17,000 pounds of fresh apples were delivered last week.
